This Time Will Pass. You Got This.
During illness, the inner critic often grows louder with thoughts like “I’m weak” or “I’m not enough.” Self-compassion means replacing judgment with kindness and speaking to yourself the way you would speak to your partner—with empathy and care.
False Beliefs To Stop Immediately:
Truth: You are still valuable, lovable, and worthy of care—your presence matters more than your productivity.
Truth: There’s no “right” way to navigate cancer. Struggling doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re human.
Truth: Change doesn’t erase who you are—it reveals new layers of strength and resilience.
Truth: Your worth is not based on what you do—it’s based on who you are.
Truth: Love deepens through vulnerability. Emotional connection often grows stronger during hardship.
Truth: Asking for help is a form of courage and strength—not weakness.
Truth: All feelings are valid. Compassion begins with allowing yourself to feel without shame.
Truth: Self-care supports your healing and strengthens your ability to show up in your relationship.
Truth: Illness may change your body, but never your worth.
Truth: You are not alone—your story is valid, and your emotions are real.
A: Illness can change roles, routines, and how we view ourselves. It’s normal to grieve that. But identity isn’t gone—it’s being reshaped through healing, strength, and new values.
A: Start small. Practice self-kindness. Focus on your values, your courage, and what you're still contributing—emotionally, relationally, and spiritually.
A: Shame thrives in silence. Sharing these feelings with a compassionate partner opens the door to healing. Your worth has never been tied to your physical state.
